[CLEVELAND, May 15, 2024]
The BorderLight Theatre Festival—taking place July 24-27, 2024 at Playhouse Square—is thrilled to unveil this year’s festival artwork created by Cleveland-based multidisciplinary artist Angelo Maneage. Chosen through a contest designed to engage local artists, Maneage's artwork exemplifies the festival’s commitment to fostering creativity and inclusivity.
Angelo Maneage's captivating collage, featuring Modernist luminary Marsden Hartley, beautifully encapsulates the innovative spirit of BorderLight Theatre Festival—a vibrant celebration of imagination and diversity at the heart of Cleveland's arts scene,” said Dale Heinen, BorderLight Theatre Festival’s Executive & Artistic Director. “With its dynamic imagery and bold vision, Maneage's collage serves as a testament to both the festival's innovative ethos and the rich tapestry of artistic talent within our community.,”
Using a mixed medium of collage, Angelo worked to emulsify traditional, communal, and experimental themes when creating the featured elements in the artwork. Much thought and consideration was put into how each asset could work together to reflect the unconventional and imaginative spirit of BorderLight Theatre Festival.
“Working with vintage matchboxes from the public domain, a swim team of aerobic water droplets formed as a sort of collaborative concierge to the festival, the clowning flower brooch a fountain of magic, its vinery climbing up the audience,” explained Angelo Maneage. “This celebration of theatre is a wide portal-pond that hones in on the culturally expressive and the fringe-tastically strange.”
The 2024 BorderLight Theatre Festival artwork will be featured alongside festival merchandise, promotions, and the much-anticipated Festival Guide.

[CLEVELAND, April 24, 2024]
Three months from today, the 2024 BorderLight Theatre Festival will return to Playhouse Square with four days of innovative performances sure to entertain audiences! From July 24 to 27, established and emerging companies in theatre, circus, immersive experiences, street theatre, poetry, workshops, stand-up comedy, and more from Cleveland and across the U.S. will light up stages throughout the performing arts neighborhood.
As one of the newest fringe festivals worldwide—the inaugural event was held in 2019— BorderLight is a platform for independent artists and companies to showcase their work and engage new audiences in a vibrant environment. In 2024 and alternating years, BorderLight is thrilled to welcome, alongside the fringe artists, several acclaimed international touring companies featuring work of diverse regions and genres.
“BorderLight Theatre Festival proudly presents a groundbreaking lineup where theatre meets societal urgency,” said Executive and Artistic Director Dale Heinen. “With two U.S. premieres, our shows delve into themes vital to our human experience, from the pressing issue of loneliness—declared a public health crisis—to explorations of belonging, racism, music, identity and love. Featuring innovative work in puppetry, physical theatre, improvisation, audience interaction and dance, these award-winning productions—some hailed at the renowned Edinburgh Festival—promise to captivate and inspire Cleveland audiences."
This year’s curated touring productions—including four international shows, (pictured from left to right)—include:
- Paper Cut | Israel
- Sancho & Me - For One Night Only | England
- The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much | France/UK
- Indigenous Liberation | Native American
- Perhaps, Perhaps … Quizás | Mexico
BorderLight Theatre Festival will take place July 24-27, 2024 in the Playhouse Square District. The full festival lineup will be announced in May 2024, with tickets going on sale in early June 2024.
