SYNOPSIS
Join Aretta Baumgartner (she/her), Education and Advocacy Director of Atlanta’s renowned Center for Puppetry Arts, and open new doors to creativity and connection through the magic of puppetry! As puppetry is an art and craft for ALL theatre-makers and ALL creative humans, everyone is welcome! This means YOU!
Participants will have a blast working together as they dive into puppetry basics. We'll explore the definition of puppetry as theatre history and global culture, enjoy an interactive overview of the five types of puppets, remind ourselves of the power of play with actor to puppeteer transformation exercises, ground ourselves in transfer of energy work (the liberating act of “disappearing” so the puppet takes focus), and learn puppetry manipulation skills applicable to styles of puppetry.
Puppets have been used to tell stories since theatre began, can be found everywhere from stage to screen and represent a “must-have” skill on every artist resume. They remind us of our deeply human connection to object use as storytelling since the beginning of civilization. Whether you're attending as an artist or curious audience member (or a bit of both), you'll find a home in puppetry! COME READY TO MOVE AND PLAY!
