SYNOPSIS
Welcome to the mysterious place that exists between asleep and awake, between darkness and light. Join our Alice as she tumbles through space and time, through lucidity and madness – as she struggles to find her footing. This shadow theatre piece features large-scale shadow puppets, projections, human silhouettes and an immersive soundscape that explores a sometimes silly, frequently bitter, often touching human journey. Adventure awaits!

Show background:
This piece began its life as “Dreamland: Shadow Realm” in July 2019 when colleagues from Orlando, Florida asked if we’d be interested in creating a puppetry experience for a room in their 300-foot long interactive maze for the “Creative City: IMMERSE” event.
The first night of the two-night event, we performed dozens of times for hundreds of people. Dreamland was a reality and we were all discovering what we had created, excited to settle into a second evening and add to and live inside our work. The second night, hurricane force winds and rain impacted the event. We were never able to completely realize or explore the piece.
We were invited to perform it at an arts festival in Summer of 2020. Like almost everything in the world, the festival was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, our passion for it was not cancelled. In fact, it deepened. It also took a new direction: we realized the original themes of exploration, darkness and light, and dreams took on new relevance as humanity struggled with isolation. This incarnation builds upon the original themes but frame the story with Alice on a quest for emotional and psychological well-being.
As of July 2022, it will have completed a run at the 2022 Atlanta Fringe Festival and has been invited to perform at the Puppeteers of America Great Plains Regional Festival in September 2022!

Aretta Baumgartner:
B.A. in Theatre Performance and M.A. in Communication Arts. Performer, teaching artist, arts advocate, Education Director at the Center for Puppetry Arts. President, Puppeteers of America. Vegetarian, animal lover, twin, lover of British television and Hallmark movies. Scarf collector. Backing vocalist for the official and original Jimmy Buffet tribute band, A1A.
Thom:
Once a Muppeteer. Once. Lover of time travel movies and has the tattoos to prove it. Collector of weird puppet records. Graphic designer, art director. SCAD grad when SCAD was three buildings in one city. Choreographed a Macy's Day Parade float.
ONE DOUBLE-O FOUR EIGHT company origins:
On independent quests for enlightenment, Thom and Aretta bumped into each other in the dark backwoods of Georgia and were bitten by a radioactive puppet. In the fever-dream that followed, Puppet Projects by ONE DOUBLE-O EIGHT was born!
